In August of
2004, Coleen Salley officially launched the Coleen Salley
Bill Morris Literacy Foundation in New Orleans. The weekend
started with Coleen doing a storytelling session for the children
of Charles R. Drew Elementary School, a Title 1 school. Children
from the Kindergarten through 2nd grades attended this author
visit, which was an example of the type of events that the
Foundation will promote.
The next night was the launch party, held at the LeMieux Gallery
in the Warehouse District of New Orleans. Over 300 people
attended this event where there was a silent auction made
up of original artwork from such children's book illustrators
as William Joyce, Ted Rand, Petra Mathers, Lisa Cohen and
Nicole Rubel, to name a few. Children's book authors also
made a contribution to the silent auction with signed books.
Some of the authors contributing books were Freddi Evans,
Kenny Harrison, Whitney Stewart and, naturally, Coleen Salley
herself.
