Coleen attended the Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival at the University of Southern Mississippi for almost 40 years. Her famous milk punch party held in her hotel room was legendary! To honor Coleen and the many authors she brought to the Book Festival, the University of Southern Mississippi has established the Coleen Salley Endowment Fund intended to fund and promote the art of storytelling during the annual Book Festival. Walter Mayes is the first recipient of the Endowment fund award for 2010. He received it because of his commitment to the art of the oral storytelling tradition.
